Environmental Management

Activities are carried out within the Balıkesir Organized Industrial Zone Directorate in order to encourage industrial investments, contribute to preventing environmental pollution through shared infrastructure facilities, and develop an environmentally conscious industrialization approach compatible with urbanization. Environmental management activities are conducted with a continuous improvement approach, providing participants with effective, regular and sustainable services.

Environmental Inspection and Environmental Management Unit

All participants operating in our Zone are obliged to comply with the Environmental Law, Organized Industrial Zones Law, Occupational Health and Safety Law, and the regulations and communiqués enacted under these laws, and to carry out their activities within the framework of these regulations.

In this context, field inspections are regularly carried out by our Environmental Inspection and Environmental Management Unit. Necessary actions are taken regarding identified nonconformities in accordance with applicable legislation, and our participants' compliance processes with environmental legislation are closely monitored.

Duties

To approve preliminary treatment plant projects of companies within the Zone boundaries and inspect their operating conditions,
To monitor sewer connection permit processes and carry out certification procedures for the relevant companies,
To continuously monitor wastewater entering the wastewater treatment plant that exceeds sewer discharge parameters, inform the relevant companies and issue necessary warnings,
To organize afforestation activities within the Zone to make our region greener and cleaner and to raise awareness among our industrialists on these matters,
To inform our participants about environmental legislation and organize training and seminars,
To ensure regular maintenance of green areas, trees and ornamental plants within the Zone and to supervise these activities.

Wastewater Treatment Plant

The Balıkesir Organized Industrial Zone Wastewater Treatment Plant provides services to ensure that domestic and industrial wastewater generated by participants operating in our Zone is treated in accordance with applicable environmental legislation.

Our plant consists of physical, chemical and biological treatment units and has a total treatment capacity of 13,300 m³/day: 1,650 + 1,650 m³/day in Phase 1 and 5,000 + 5,000 m³/day in Phase 2.

At our treatment plant, wastewater is received at the inlet structure and passed through coarse and fine screens, the grit and grease removal unit and the equalization tank; it then passes through primary sedimentation, coagulation, flocculation, the biophosphorus tank, aeration tanks and final sedimentation units, completing physical, chemical and biological treatment.

Thanks to this process structure, the pollution load is effectively removed, compliance with discharge standards is achieved, and environmental protection is supported. Our plant also provides significant support for our regional industrialists to carry out sustainable production activities in compliance with environmental legislation.

Through the Continuous Wastewater Monitoring System (SAİS) Cabin located within our plant, the outlet values of treated water are continuously monitored and kept under control. This enables real-time monitoring of discharge quality and ensures continuous compliance with environmental legislation.

In addition, inspection processes conducted quarterly by the relevant authorities are successfully completed, providing concrete evidence of our plant's environmentally responsible, reliable and fully compliant operating approach.

Our Wastewater Treatment Plant holds an Environmental Permit Certificate and continues its activities in accordance with the relevant legislation. In addition, pursuant to Article 29 of the Environmental Law, it also holds a Wastewater Treatment Plant Energy Cost Reimbursement Certificate in order to benefit from incentive measures within the scope of the Regulation on Procedures and Principles for Benefiting from Incentive Measures for Wastewater Treatment Plants.

Sustainability and Environmental Approach

The Balıkesir OIZ Wastewater Treatment Plant contributes to regional industry not only through its existing treatment services, but also through investments and practices focused on environmental sustainability.

In this context, the World Bank-financed Thermal Sludge Drying Plant and Wastewater Recovery Plant projects are currently at the tender stage. Once these projects are implemented, significant gains are expected in increasing resource efficiency, supporting water reuse and reducing waste volumes.

In addition, our plant has documented its institutional approach to environmental management with its Zero Waste Certificate and ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Certificate. Efforts to reduce the carbon footprint and practices aimed at increasing water efficiency are also continuing with determination.
